How To Start A Blog For Beginners: Step By Step Guide

If you want to learn how to start your own blog than this is exactly what you need.

I'm going to share everything you need to know to successfully create your own blog.

Even if you're brand new and a complete beginner, I'm going to share with you how to launch your own blog starting today.

Step 1. Find Your Why

There are many reasons for starting a blog.

But, let's be honest, most people start a blog to make money doing something they're passionate about.

The journey of becoming a blogger and having the opportunity to make a full-time living from your blog is absolutely possible. But I want to warn you of one thing...

Understand WHY you are doing this.

Your journey is your own, but I can tell you that it's going to take a lot of work to create success, so, be sure you find your why and hold on to it throughout your journey.

Step 2. Choose A Domain Name That Represents Your Brand

There are a lot of different ways to come up with naming your blog.

Choose something that represents what you stand for. If you can't think of a brand then simply use your name.

Use the box below to determine if your name is available.

Step 3. Get Started With WordPress

Lot's of people fall into the trap of creating blogs with third party "done-for-you" solutions.

While it may seem easier to create your blog with other platforms, the reality is, you won't actually own your blog.

WordPress now powers over 75 million websites across the globe.

That's over 30% of the entire internet. Why?

Because when you use WordPress for your website, you're creating something you actually own and have full control over.

You wouldn't want to wake up one day and see that some third party website provider has changed their policies and put your website in jeopardy.

This is why I recommend using WordPress.

(Clicking the link above will give you a discount for starting your blog)

Bluehost is one of the best hosting companies for starting your blog and they are actually recommended by WordPress themselves on their website.

Step 4. Pick A Theme

A theme is what the design of your WordPress website will actually look like.

The cool thing about themes nowadays is that you won't have to do any coding to make your blog look beautiful.

As a matter of fact, I created the website you're on right now without knowing how to do a single line of code. Pretty cool huh!

So, the big question...

What theme should you pick?

While it's tempting to use a free theme (which you absolutely can do), I recommend one of the following themes, and I'll tell you why for each.

Theme #1.

Divi Theme - (Click here to see it)

This theme is build by Elegant themes and is for you if want a beautiful website.

Their templates are among the best and have some of the most advanced features that make your website look amazing.

If you've ever come across a website and it's beauty "wowed" you, chances are it was built with this theme.

Theme #2.

Thrive Themes - (Click here to see it)

This theme is an all-in-one solution for marketers.

If you're main focus of your blog is to create a business by selling from your site, than this theme is most likely going to provide you with everything you need to make money from your blog.

Step 5. Create and Publish Blog Posts

There is something I must tell you as you start your blogging journey.

The most important part if you want to grow your blog and business.

You MUST CREATE content on a regular basis.

Now, obviously everyone is able to posts at different rates depending on their skillset level and how busy their lives are.

But please understand this.

If you don't posts, you will not get visitors and your blog will not grow.

Step 6. Share Your Posts On Social Media

When you first start your blog, you won't have any people visiting your site.

That's okay, it's brand new and nobody knows about it yet.

This is why it's even more important to share your blog posts on social media outlets.

As your blog grows in popularity, you won't have to do this as much, but keep in mind that sharing your posts is always an option to get a boost.

Step 7. Build An Email List

Building an email list is one of the most important things you can do to grow a blog and a business.

Here's what I call the power of building an email list...

Traffic on tap!

After you start collecting emails from people, you can then send them emails promoting new blog posts and even selling products and services to them.

The bigger your email list grows the more of a boost you will get when you publish new content and launching products to sell.

The two pieces to building an email list

First - You will need to capture leads.

This is typically done by building a single webpage called a lead capture page.

Here is one of the best capture pages softwares on the planet called Clickfunnels.

(Click here to sign up for a free Clickfunnels Trial)

Second - You will need to email your leads

In order to email your leads, you need to have an email service provider.

These are also called autoresponders.

This is how you will communicate with all of your leads.

Here is one of the best email autoresponder services on the market called Getresponse.

Step 8. Build Your Audience & Grow Your Brand

The way you build your audience and grow your brand is through your content.

When you consistently provide the marketplace with valuable content, your audience will grow and your brand will start to become more well known.

The key to growing your audience is by being consistent in creating valuable, engaging content. This is the growth formula.

Step 9. Sell To Your Audience

Now it's time to make some money.

If you want to create a business out of your blog, you will need to sell to your audience.

If you follow step 8 mentioned above, this will be a natural process.

Because you've provided your audience with such value, they will absolutely be willing to pull out their wallets and purchase whatever it is you're promoting or selling.

What should you sell?

If you want the easiest path to making money through your blog, I recommend getting started with something called affiliate marketing.

You can read my full post about affiliate marketing by clicking here.

If you don't want to do affiliate marketing you can also make money by offering a service of your own such as: coaching or consulting...

Or, you can create and sell your own digital products.

Step 10. Take Massive Action

One thing I've learned about creating success online in anything, is that success comes to those that take action.

If you've read this far down, then I commend you for doing your thorough research, but learning alone will not get your anywhere, you must take action.

Wrapping up...

I appreciate you and commend you for taking the time to learn how to create your own blog.

I hope to see you as a success story in the future.

If you got value out of this post, please share it with others.

All the best,

Awesome post. How come there is no info on keyword research when it comes to blog posts? Have you done another article on that elsewhere, maybe?
I always remember hearing you talk about keyword research in your videos.
    Anywho, thanks a bunch 😀

    • Nathan Lucas says:

Good Point Pablo. I appreciate you for stopping by and thanks for the suggestion.

  • Hey Nathan!

I had started my blog years ago but just did not stick with it. I have been doing YouTube but feel like blogging is MORE of my strength. My blog is probably going to transition more to the MMO niche but has been more about health (specifically bodybuilding) in the past but I think I can allow for the transition because the domain is kind of general and I do not have much of a following.

    Your thoughts?

Jason (formally known as Jay Brazen)

    • Nathan Lucas says:

Hey Jay! Good to see you on here. It sounds like you’ve already made your mind up on this. Roll with it and if you decide later to change, you have the ability to do so.

      Nathan

  • Jeremy says:

    Hello Nathan,
Thank you very much for your informative video. I’m going to get started today. I have an idea with lots of content that has not been overly serviced. My question what is a good way to obtain photos of my topic to use in my posts legally? Do they all need to be from my own camera or should I be purchasing pictures to use?
    Thank you again. Great work.

    Jeremy.

    • Nathan Lucas says:

      Hey Jeremy,

Good question! A site I like to use for royalty free photos is called Unsplash. Another popular one is Pexels. There are more out there but these two should get you going in the right direction.

      Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

Thank you for your step by step guide. Is blogging dead? Or is it better to post videos on youtube?

    Thanks and all the best,
    Terry

    • Nathan Lucas says:

Blogging is definitely not dead. I think it’s a good Idea to play to your strengths. If your good at video, then do YouTube. If you’re a good writer then blog. Either way, if you can find a balance to do both, then that’s what I recommend.
